Updated: May 27, 2019

Does your laptop battery give out a lot sooner than it used to?

Sounds like it's time to think about replacing the battery.

Why My Laptop Battery Cannot Last Longer?

This varies depending on your usage, of course, but the average laptop battery is good for around 400 recharges cycle.

After that, it starts to lose its capacity to hold a charge.

That’s why the battery that once gave you, say, 3-4 hours’ worth of runtime now peters out after just 1-2 hours.

And after a few years, you might be lucky to get an even an hour.

How to improve laptop battery life?

1. Dim your screen

By far the biggest power drain on most laptops is the screen. Dimming the screen brightness can add 30 minutes or more to your battery life.

2. Don’t leave your laptop on permanent charge

This helps to prevent battery degradation and means you can leave the laptop always connected

to the mains. When you want to use your laptop on battery power and get maximum battery life, disable the limiter and allow the laptop to charge to 100 percent.

3. Pop the laptop battery out

If your laptop has got a removable battery and you wish to use your laptop intensively, you are advised to remove the battery from the socket.

Of course, many modern laptops have sealed batteries .Give it a break so that it can cool down or you can move to someplace with a lower temperature.

4. Upgrade your memory and SSD

It will have the extra benefit of making your laptop an awful lot quicker.

Should I Keep My Laptop Battery Plugged In All The Time?

Having a battery fully charged and the laptop plugged in is not harmful, because as soon as the charge level reaches 100% the battery stops receiving charging energy and this energy is bypassed directly to the power supply system of the laptop.

However there's a disadvantage in keeping the battery in its socket when the laptop is plugged in, but only if it's currently suffering from excessive heating caused by the laptop hardware.

Avoid discharging your laptop completely after charging it. The best thing you can do is try to keep the battery level between 40 percent to 80 percent.

Overheating is your battery’s biggest enemy!

In an intensive usage which leads to a large amount of heat produced (i.e. Games, temperatures above 60ºC) the battery should be removed from the socket in order to prevent unwanted heating.

Make sure that your laptop doesn’t get too hot and your cooling fan is working properly.

So, if your laptop’s CPU/HDD temperature is around 40ºC, keeping the laptop plugged in is fine.

These strategies will help you make the most of the battery you have.
