SSD vs. HDD: Which is best for your needs?

Today’s buyer face a choice when it comes to data storage: should you buy a less expensive system with a traditional spinning hard drive (often called an HDD) or spend more to get a faster, SSD?

For most buyers, the answer depends on the kinds of files they store, their budget, and their need for speed in data-intensive tasks.

How often do you feel frustrated with your computer acting up, being slow, or freezing up?

Basically, SSD and HDD do the same job: they can start your operating system, store your applications and your personal files. But each has its own specific characteristics.

Here’s why some users consider HDDs to be superior to SSDs:

(1) The price

SSD are more expensive than HDD. An internal 1TB HDD costs on average around MYR220. On the other hand, it will take about MYR800 for an (1TB) SSD of the same capacity.

(2) Storage capacity

For HDD, around 500GB and 2TB maximum for notebook size drives; 10TB max for desktops , but the SSD chip has so far kept them far smaller (128 GB or 256 GB are common).

(3) Transfer speed

The transfer speed is the strong point of the SSD. A computer with a SSD will start around 10-13 seconds average bootup time and be faster than HDD for starting and running applications as well as for transferring files.

(4) Availability on the market

HDD are the most common and most accessible though SSD are starting to be increasingly present especially in small Netbook and Ultrabook laptops with storage capacities ranging from 256 to 516GB for the most part.

(5) Noise

Internal or external HDD drives are relatively noisy. Even the quietest HDD will emit a slight noise because of its playback arm and the rotation of its disc. SSDs produce virtually no noise.

(6) Consumption

SSD is less intensive than HDD. This lower energy consumption results in several minutes/hours of autonomy in addition. While for HDD more power draw, averages 6 – 7 watts and therefore uses more battery.

Difference between SSD and HDD

An HDD might be the right choice if:

  • You need lots of storage capacity, up to 10TB

  • Don’t want to spend much money

  • Don’t care too much about how fast a computer boots up or opens programs

- then get a hard drive (HDD).

An SSD might be the right choice if:

  • You are willing to pay for faster performance

  • Don’t mind limited storage capacity or can work around that (though consumer SSD now go up to 4TB and enterprise run as high as 60TB)
